What is a Mercy Rule (Run Rule)?

A mercy rule (also called a run rule) is a regulation that ends a game early when one team builds an insurmountable lead, sparing the losing team from further lopsided competition.
The mercy rule triggers when the scoring margin reaches a predefined threshold at or after a specified point in the game. In baseball and softball, a common mercy rule is a 10-run lead after 5 innings (or 15 runs after 3 innings). In basketball, it might be a 40-point lead at halftime. In soccer, some leagues use a running clock (instead of stopping for fouls and out-of-bounds) once a team is ahead by 5 or more goals. Mercy rules serve multiple purposes. They protect the losing team from a demoralizing experience, especially important in youth sports where children may lose interest in the sport after being humiliated. They free up field or court time for subsequent games that are on the schedule. They reduce injury risk, as blowout games sometimes lead to careless play. And they discourage teams from running up the score, which promotes sportsmanship. The main disadvantage is that mercy-rule games count in the standings, meaning the losing team's goal differential may not fully reflect how lopsided the game was (since it ended early). Some leagues address this by capping the goal differential contribution of any single game. When configuring mercy rules, organizers should consider the sport, age group, and competitive level. Youth leagues typically have more aggressive mercy rules (lower thresholds, earlier activation) than adult competitive leagues. The rules should be communicated clearly in the league handbook so all teams know what to expect.

Example

In a youth baseball league, the mercy rule triggers if a team leads by 10 or more runs after the losing team has batted in the 5th inning. If the score is 14-2 after 5 complete innings, the game ends immediately and 14-2 is the final score.
