What is Points Percentage?

Points percentage is a standings metric that divides a team's earned points by the maximum possible points, normalizing standings when teams have played different numbers of games.
Points percentage (P%) is calculated as: Points Earned / Maximum Possible Points. In a league where a win is worth 2 points and a loss is worth 0, a team with 14 points after 10 games has a P% of 14/20 = .700. If another team has 12 points but has only played 8 games, their P% is 12/16 = .750, meaning they are actually performing better despite having fewer total points. Points percentage is essential when teams have played unequal numbers of games, which commonly happens due to rainouts, forfeits, bye weeks, or teams joining mid-season. Without normalization, a team that has simply played more games could appear to be in first place when they are actually winning at a lower rate. The NHL popularized points percentage during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season when divisions played different numbers of games. Many recreational leagues face the same challenge every season when weather cancellations or facility closures affect some teams more than others. Points percentage is most useful as a tiebreaker or sorting criterion when games played varies. When all teams have played the same number of games, it is mathematically equivalent to sorting by total points. League management software can be configured to sort standings by P% instead of raw points, ensuring fair rankings regardless of schedule disparities.

Example

Team A has 18 points in 12 games (P% = .750). Team B has 16 points in 10 games (P% = .800). Despite Team A having more total points, Team B ranks higher because their points percentage is better, reflecting a higher winning rate.
