What is the Round of 16?
The Round of 16 is the stage of an elimination tournament where 16 teams remain, playing 8 matches to determine which 8 teams advance to the quarterfinals.
The Round of 16 is a specific stage in an elimination bracket, occurring when the field has been narrowed to exactly 16 teams. It is sometimes called the "Sweet Sixteen" in basketball culture or the "Last 16" in international soccer. This round produces the quarterfinal matchups and is often the point where a tournament shifts from preliminary or group-stage play to high-stakes knockout competition. In a 32-team single elimination bracket, the Round of 16 is the second round. In a 64-team bracket, it is the third round. In tournaments that use pool play followed by a bracket, the Round of 16 is often the first bracket round after pool play concludes. For example, the FIFA World Cup uses 8 groups of 4 teams; the top 2 from each group advance to a Round of 16 knockout stage. For tournament organizers, the Round of 16 is an important scheduling milestone. It typically marks the transition point where games become single-venue or featured matchups rather than being spread across multiple fields. Seeding matters greatly at this stage because the bracket structure determines which teams meet, and higher seeds should face lower seeds based on pool play results or regular season standings. Proper bracket software ensures these seeding rules are applied automatically so the best teams are rewarded for their earlier performance.
Example
A 32-team baseball tournament plays a first round of 16 games on Friday. The 16 winners enter the Round of 16 on Saturday morning, producing 8 winners who advance to the quarterfinals Saturday afternoon.
