What is a Shootout (Tiebreaker)?
A shootout is a tiebreaking procedure used when a game remains tied after overtime, where players take alternating individual scoring attempts against the opposing goalkeeper or goalie to determine the winner.
A shootout resolves tied games through a series of one-on-one scoring attempts. In soccer, each team takes 5 penalty kicks from the penalty spot, alternating between teams. If still tied after 5 rounds, it continues in sudden death (one kick per team) until one team scores and the other does not. In hockey, each team selects 3 shooters who take turns on breakaway attempts against the goalie, with sudden death rounds following if needed. Shootouts are dramatic and beloved by spectators, producing some of the most iconic moments in sports. However, they are controversial among purists because they reduce a team sport to individual skill. A team that dominated 90 minutes of soccer can lose on penalty kicks to a team that defended the entire game. For this reason, some leagues and tournaments avoid shootouts in favor of extended overtime periods or replayed games. In recreational leagues, shootouts are practical because they resolve games quickly and keep the schedule on time. A penalty shootout takes about 10 minutes, while extra overtime periods could extend a game by 30 minutes or more, pushing subsequent games past their scheduled start times. Shootout rules should specify: how many initial rounds (usually 3 or 5), whether all roster players must shoot before any repeat (common in youth leagues), whether the shootout result counts as a win or a separate "shootout win" in the standings (hockey-style points systems distinguish between regulation wins and shootout wins), and whether goal differential from shootouts counts in standings calculations (typically it does not).
Example
A soccer playoff game is tied 2-2 after 90 minutes and two 15-minute extra time periods. The teams proceed to a penalty shootout. After 5 rounds, it is 3-3. In the 6th round, Team A scores and Team B misses. Team A wins the shootout 4-3 and advances.
