What is a Best-of Series?
A best-of series is a playoff format where two teams play multiple games, and the first team to win a majority of the games (e.g., 4 out of 7) wins the series and advances.
A best-of series extends a single matchup across multiple games to reduce the impact of luck and reward the more consistent team. The most common formats are best-of-3 (first to 2 wins), best-of-5 (first to 3 wins), and best-of-7 (first to 4 wins). Professional leagues like the NBA, NHL, and MLB use best-of-7 for their championship rounds because it gives the better team a higher probability of advancing. Statistically, a best-of-7 series gives a team with a 60% single-game win probability roughly an 81% chance of winning the series, compared to just 60% in a single elimination game. In recreational and youth leagues, best-of-3 is the most practical option because it requires only 2 to 3 games per round rather than 4 to 7. Even a best-of-3 significantly reduces upset probability compared to single games. Scheduling a best-of series is more complex than single elimination because the number of games is variable. A best-of-7 series might end in 4 games (a sweep) or go the full 7. Organizers must reserve venues for the maximum number of games while knowing some may not be needed. Home-court alternation patterns (2-2-1-1-1 or 2-3-2) add further complexity. League management software can automate series scheduling, track series standings, and dynamically adjust the schedule as games are completed.
Example
In an adult hockey league playoff, the semifinal is a best-of-5 series. Team A wins games 1 and 2, loses game 3, then wins game 4 to take the series 3-1 and advance to the final. Game 5 is never played.
