What is a Double Header?
A double header is a scheduling arrangement where a team plays two games on the same day, typically back-to-back or with a short break between them, at the same venue.
Double headers originated in baseball as a way to make up postponed games and maximize the use of expensive stadium facilities. In recreational leagues, double headers serve several purposes: catching up on rainouts and cancellations, fitting a full season into a compressed schedule, reducing the total number of weeknights teams need to be available, and maximizing venue rental efficiency. When scheduling double headers, organizers must consider player fatigue and safety. Playing two full games in a row is physically demanding, especially in running-intensive sports like soccer, basketball, and hockey. Best practices include: scheduling at least a 30-minute break between games, considering shorter game lengths for the second game, ensuring teams bring adequate substitutes, and avoiding giving one team a double header while their opponent is fresh on a single-game night. Double headers also affect standings and scheduling equity. If one team plays two games on Saturday while another spreads those same two games across separate weeks, the rest and recovery dynamics are different. Good scheduling software distributes double headers evenly across all teams so no team bears a disproportionate burden. In baseball and softball, a traditional double header uses two 7-inning games (instead of the standard 9), while a modern "split" double header has a gap of several hours between games. Most recreational leagues use the traditional back-to-back format with shortened game times.
Example
A softball league rained out 4 games in week 3. The commissioner schedules 2 double headers the following Saturday: Team A vs Team B at 10 AM and 12 PM, Team C vs Team D at 10 AM and 12 PM, with 7-inning games instead of the usual 9.
