What is a Ladder Tournament?
A ladder tournament is an ongoing competition format where players or teams are ranked on a ladder and can move up by challenging and defeating opponents ranked above them.
In a ladder tournament, participants are listed in a ranked order, and any participant can challenge someone ranked a set number of positions above them (typically 1 to 3 spots). If the challenger wins, they swap positions with the defeated opponent. If the defender wins, positions stay the same. The ladder runs continuously over weeks or months, and the player or team at the top of the ladder at the end of the season is the champion. Ladder tournaments are most popular in individual sports like tennis, racquetball, and badminton, but they also work for small team leagues. The format is ideal when participants have varying schedules because matches are arranged between individual pairs rather than requiring everyone to show up on the same night. Most ladders include activity rules: if a player does not issue or accept a challenge within a set period (often 2 weeks), they drop one position to prevent stagnation. The main advantage is flexibility. Players schedule their own matches around their availability, making ladders popular in corporate and club settings. The disadvantage is that the format lacks the shared event atmosphere of weekly league nights. It can also favor participants who play more often, as frequent challengers have more opportunities to climb. A variation called the pyramid tournament allows challenges within the same tier (row) of a triangular structure, giving more players realistic paths to the top.
Example
A company tennis ladder has 20 employees ranked 1 through 20. Player 8 challenges Player 6 and wins, so they swap: Player 8 moves to position 6 and Player 6 drops to position 8. The ladder resets every quarter.
