What is a Waiver Wire?
A waiver wire is a system that governs how available players are claimed by teams, using a priority order (typically inverse of standings) to ensure weaker teams get first pick of available talent.
The waiver wire is a structured process for distributing available players to teams. When a player becomes available, either because they were released by a team, registered as a free agent, or returned from an absence, they are placed "on waivers" for a set period (usually 24 to 48 hours). During this window, any team can submit a claim. If multiple teams claim the same player, waiver priority determines who gets them. Waiver priority is most commonly based on inverse standings: the team with the worst record gets first priority, the second-worst gets second priority, and so on. This promotes competitive balance by giving struggling teams first access to available talent. Some leagues reset waiver priority after each successful claim, while others maintain a rolling priority that rotates to the bottom after a team makes a claim. The waiver wire is borrowed from professional sports and is most commonly used in draft-based recreational leagues, fantasy-style leagues, and competitive adult leagues where roster balance matters. In casual rec leagues, a simpler first-come-first-served free agent system often suffices. The advantage of waivers is structured fairness: every team has a chance at available players, and weaker teams are helped first. The disadvantage is administrative complexity: someone must manage the waiver claims, resolve conflicts, and update priority lists. League management software streamlines this by automating the claim window, priority calculation, and roster updates.
Example
A hockey league uses inverse-standings waiver priority. A skilled player is released by the first-place team. The last-place team and third-place team both claim him. The last-place team wins the waiver claim because they have higher priority.
