What is a Player Draft?

A player draft is a structured process where team captains or managers take turns selecting players from a pool of available participants to build their rosters for the upcoming season.
Drafts are the primary method of team formation in many adult recreational leagues, especially in sports like basketball, hockey, and flag football. Rather than players forming their own teams (which often leads to lopsided rosters), a draft distributes talent evenly by giving weaker teams earlier picks. The two most common draft formats are snake drafts and auction drafts. In a snake draft, the pick order reverses each round: if Team A picks first in round 1, they pick last in round 2 and first again in round 3. This helps equalize the value of draft positions. In an auction draft, every team has a budget (tied to the salary cap) and bids on players. The highest bidder gets the player, and their remaining budget decreases. Auction drafts give every team a chance at every player, while snake drafts are simpler to run. Draft order is typically determined by the previous season's final standings (worst team picks first) or by a random lottery. Some leagues use a weighted lottery where weaker teams have better odds of getting a top pick but are not guaranteed it. Running a smooth draft night requires preparation: a finalized player pool with skill ratings, a clear set of rules distributed in advance, a timer for each pick (usually 60 to 90 seconds), and a system to track selections in real time. League management software can host drafts digitally, enforce pick timers, show available players, and automatically update rosters as picks are made.

Example

A 10-team adult hockey league holds a snake draft. Ten captains gather on a Tuesday night and take turns selecting from a pool of 100 registered players. After 10 rounds, each team has a 10-player roster with a balanced mix of skill levels.
