What is a Rainout?

A rainout is the cancellation or postponement of a scheduled game due to inclement weather, most commonly rain that makes outdoor playing surfaces unsafe or unplayable.
Rainouts are an inevitable challenge for any outdoor sports league. Beyond rain, games can be postponed due to lightning, extreme heat, flooding, snow, and unsafe field conditions from prior weather events. Indoor leagues occasionally face their own version when facilities close due to power outages, HVAC failures, or building emergencies. A comprehensive rainout policy should address: who makes the cancellation decision (typically the league commissioner or facility manager), how early the decision is communicated (ideally 2 to 4 hours before game time), how participants are notified (email, text, app notification, website update), and the rescheduling process. Rescheduling rainouts is one of the most time-consuming tasks for league organizers. Best practices include: building makeup dates into the original schedule (for example, reserving one Saturday per month as a potential makeup day), using double headers to catch up, prioritizing games with standings implications, and accepting that some games may not be rescheduled if the season runs too long. Communication is critical during rainouts. Teams that drive to a venue only to discover the game has been canceled lose trust in the league. Automated weather-based alerts and a centralized status page reduce confusion. League management software can send mass notifications, track which games need rescheduling, and identify available makeup slots based on venue and team availability.

Example

A Tuesday night soccer game is rained out at 4 PM when the field manager declares the pitches unplayable. The league software sends an automatic text to all affected players and reschedules the game to the following Saturday makeup slot at 2 PM.
